Old Low Light Heritage Centre

Explore 900 years of maritime heritage…

At the heart of North Shields Fish Quay the Old Low Light offers a unique experience to explore 900 years of maritime heritage.

Through a changing programme of hands-on activities, workshops, exhibitions and events you can learn about the life of the folks of North Shields through the experiences of real people and the objects they used.

In the Heritage Gallery you can find out how the River Tyne sustained not only a whole community but contributed to the economy of the region. Listen to stories from fishermen still making their living on the river. You can discover how the maritime industry has changed over the years and come face to face with some of the rivers most prominent sealife birds. Get hands on with interactive games and let the little ones dress up in bygone costume. A great way to spend an afternoon.

The Old Low Light viewing platform offers spectacular views over the mouth of the Tyne – a ‘must do’ whatever the weather! From early morning summer views to early winter sun down views the view of the Tyne is ever-changing yet timeless.

Fuel up in the cafe, experience the famous Tynemouth Coffee Co. coffee and tasty treats on offer. Bring along your favourite vinyl or listen to the cafe’s collection, the cafe really has a wonderful warm buzz and you’re welcome to enjoy it too! The cafe terrace looks over the river and is a great place to enjoy your cuppa with a breath of fresh air.

Don’t forget to treat yourself in the gift shop, from pocket money toys to special finds, products are locally sourced and sure to appeal to even the most discerning shoppers.

Whenever you would like to visit you can be sure of a warm welcome!
