The Fish Quay Community Project involved a local community sub group of FISH (Folk Interested In Shields Harbour - which is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of North Shields Fish Quay) called FISHcast, and with the support of North Tyneside Council and the North of England Civic Trust, they secured Lottery funding to produce a character statement for the Fish Quay Conservation Area.

Working with others in the community (including property owners, volunteers, schools and cross-sector organisations), FISHcast produced a colourful, informative statement highlighting the historical and cultural significance of the area. The project kept in touch with the council throughout so that the document could become a planning tool to help protect against inappropriate development and identify opportunities for enhancement on the quay.

The group prepared a statement which met the needs of the community and the local council. It was adopted by North Tyneside Council as a Supplementary Planning Document within the new Local Development Framework, and is now used to inform the conservation, regeneration and improvement of the area while ensuring that the uniqueness of the Fish Quay is retained. FISHcast, as the character statement is called, was 'highly commended' in the Cultural Heritage category of the 2006 Europa Nostra Award.
